Recent New Discoveries at Woodbury Auction's Annual Fall Important Estates Auction

Posted September 15, 2011
Woodbury, CT – Woodbury Auction's Annual Fall Important Estates Auction is set for Saturday, October 1st at 10:00 am. The sale, comprising 345 lots from over 30 estates and consignors from the tri-state area, will be held at the firm's new saleroom at 710 Main Street South, Middle Quarter Mall, in Woodbury.

According to owner Thomas Schwenke, his auction firm was recently commissioned to auction the remainder of the contents of the historic Seven Hearths property in Southbury. Included is a pair of folk art portraits of unknown sitters, likely husband and wife, with original unlined canvases and original stretchers and signed verso "by Thomas Wilder, May 14, 1846". 36" high, 30 1/2" wide. Thomas Wilder (1791-1862) was an itinerant portrait artist working throughout New England from about 1825 up until his death. Born in Brattleboro, Vermont, Wilder and his family moved across the border to New Ipswich, New Hampshire in 1805. Throughout his career, Wilder is known to have done portraits for families in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A total of 38 portraits by Wilder are known, at least 16 of which are signed and dated in black paint on the reverse of the canvas.

Other featured artworks include a recently discovered original illustration by William Reusswig (Am. 1902-1978) for the December 1955 issue of True Magazine. The gouache on paper depicts the famed "Donner Pass" wagon train party, and was unknown until consigned to Woodbury Auction.

Among the furniture highlights of the auction are a rare Gillows arts and crafts carved and copper mounted cabinet, a very fine Regency carved and gilded convex mirror, a carved mahogany Georgian pitch pediment secretary, and a rare Roxbury Massachusetts mahogany banjo clock by Edgerly and Polsey. There is a large group of French provincial furniture from a Connecticut shoreline estate, and numerous lots of American 18th century country furniture from the Seven Hearths consignment.

Other noteworthy furniture lots are a Connecticut dish top tea table, a group of early 18th century English queen anne chairs, a grain painted Southern corner cabinet, a tiger maple Southern server, and an elaborately decorated Sicilian goat cart – or Caretto Siciliano – dating to the 19th century.

Important sterling silver lots to be sold include a 167 piece sterling silver service by Dominick & Haff, and a very fine seven piece early Gorham sterling tea service including the original matching tray. Other estate silver includes a fine and rare American coin silver serving tray by William Adams, New York circa 1830-35.

Examples of Native American Art are also being offered. Noted among these lots are a group of beaded belts and moccasins, several woven blankets, and a group of fetish items. The sale also features many fine art lots, selected Asian fine and decorative arts, books and oriental carpets. Among the oriental carpets on the block is a fine silk Tabriz prayer rug from another Connecticut estate.

Other major items of interest for auto enthusiasts include a 1975 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Saloon, sold original by Frank Dale & Stepsons, the premier London Rolls Royce/Bentley firm, and a 1967 Matchless G80 CS British Motorcycle.

Preview times for the sale are Wednesday, September 28th from 9am to 5pm, Thursday, September 29th from 9am to 5pm, Friday, September 30, 2011 - 9am to 7pm, and Saturday, October 1st (day of sale) from 8am to 10am. An extended preview with wine and cheese will be open from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday evening.

The catalog for the sale is viewable at www.woodburyauction.com. Absentee and phone bidding are available for this live gallery auction, and the sale will be broadcast live through Live Auctioneers. To register or arrange for absentee or phone bidding, please call Woodbury Auction at 203-266-0323.
