Woodbury Auction’s Decorative Arts Auction Brings Standing Room Only Crowd on Sunday, February 26th

Posted March 2, 2012
Woodbury, CT – Woodbury Auction’s February 26th auction featured over 365 lots of market fresh fine and decorative arts from multiple estates and collections, including estates in California, Florida, Illinois, New York and Connecticut, and a “standing room only” crowd was on hand for the noon sale.

According to owner/auctioneer Thomas Schwenke, “. . . the increased attendance was due to an enhanced local advertising campaign designed to make more local residents aware of our new location, the services we offer to our consignors and buyers, and the fact that we have had fourteen auctions in the past three years.” According to Schwenke, a well-known American furniture dealer who founded Woodbury Auction in 2009, “a significant percentage of the cataloged lots were sold to Fairfield and Litchfield county residents.”

Among the interesting highlights of the sale were a Markneukirchen tiger maple violin, made in Germany circa 1920, labeled by Arno Erwin Hendel, which knocked down to a phone bidder for $800. The same estate yielded a rare silver mounted Paris-made bow stamped Leon Pique, which was claimed by a bidder in the room for $862.

A fine Tiffany & Company six piece sterling silver tea service in the Hampton pattern, including a heating stand, coffee pot, teapot, covered sugar, creamer and waste bowl, was sold to a Live Auctioneer bidder for $5227, and a set of eight Erte crystal “Majestique” champagne flutes with cut/etched figures of muses also sold to the internet for $1045.

An interesting group of sixteen (16) presidential land grants with signatures from James Monroe (3), Martin Van Buren (10), James K. Polk (1), Millard Fillmore (1), and James Buchanan (1) generated a great deal of interest and were claimed by a bidder in the room for $460.

The top lot in the sale, hammering down for $15,990 to an internet bidder who won out over a London phone bidder, was the Tom Wesselmann (Am. 1931-2004) vinyl applique banner entitled "Nude Banner", circa 1968-69, believed one of the original edition of 20. Another of the 20 is held at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. 59" high, 71 1/2" wide. The work was a framed pop art conception of a reclining nude, with table set with roses and an orange, with blue star in field. Known for his "Pop-Art” nude figures--the Great American Nude Series--as well as collages, often with food themes, Tom Wesselmann is a Cincinnati born artist who studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and at Cooper Union in New York City in the late 1950s. In 1959, Wesselmann began his collages, which show influence of modernist artists ranging from Willem de Kooning to Henri Matisse.

Other artwork results include a framed oil on canvas, still life painting of pears on a table setting, Henk Bos (Dutch, 1901-1979), which fetched $1698 to an absentee bidder, and a framed abstract oil on paper by Rolph Scarlett (Ca. 1889 - 1984) circa 1950, which knocked down for $399 to a Live Auctioneers bidder.

An appealing folk art sign painter's trade sign "J.W. Mallett - Sign Painter" in red letter shadowing and gold letters and border on a black ground, 28" high, 17 1/2" wide, went to a bidder in the room for $1500.

A modernist brass and tile top coffee table with tapered brass legs, retailed by and bearing stamp of G. Fox & Company, Hartford, was sold to the internet for $860.

The firm’s next auction is scheduled for Sunday, June 3rd @ no0n. Consignments may be discussed by calling (203) 266-0323 or emailing Woodbury Auction at info@woodburyauction.com with photos and enquiries.
