Decorative Arts Bring Strong Online Participation at Schwenke’s Woodbury Auction October Fine Estates Auction

Woodbury, CT – On Wednesday, October 24th Woodbury Auction held its October Fine Estates Auction with a diverse offering of 339 lots of estate decorative arts from two prime estates and numerous other estates and consignors. The auction featured fine and decorative arts, antique and mid-century modern furniture, silver, jewelry, folk art, and many lots of porcelain. According to Thomas Schwenke, owner/auctioneer, in this sale the firm again experienced an increase in sales on the internet with over 420 absentee bids placed before the sale and over 500 bidders competing online during the sale, all resulting in over 48% of the catalog lots selling on the internet, representing over 56% of the sale measured by dollar volume.

Top lots of the sale included a group of five Asian snuff bottles which sold to the internet for $1,968, a pair of Royal Worcester porcelain ponies which also sold to the internet for $1,476, and an “after Old Master” painting which fetched $1,320 to an online bidder, a distinctive framed Italian pietra dura marble artistic composition selling to the internet for $1,353.

Also going to internet bidders were a set of six black painted bamboo arm chairs at $1,168, a framed folk art carousel panel for $861, and an American tiger maple candlestand fetched $930.

Bidders in the room claimed many porcelain and silver lots, including a partial sterling silver flatware service knocked down for $1,320, a group of 27 coin silver pieces brought $497, and a large lot of rose medallion porcelain hammered for $234.

Woodbury Auction’s next sale is the Annual Holiday Fine Estates Auction set for December 9th, and additional consignments for that sale are being accepted through mid-November.
