Woodbury, CT – On Sunday February 28th at 11am, Schwenke Auctioneers will hold a Connecticut Fine Estates Auction featuring estate property from several estates and consignors. The auction includes a large collection of Asian decorative arts from a New Milford estate; Mid-Century Modern decorative arts, American, English and Continental decorative arts from a Sandy Hook estate; folk art and American country furniture from the Stevenson Collection; English & other sterling silver, jewelry, fine art, miscellaneous decorative arts; a collection of Croatian folk art paintings from a West 83rd Street estate; a group of ethnic art from a West 93rd Street estate; a group of American and English furniture and decorative arts from an Ulster County, NY estate; and estate oriental rugs. The sale is being held at the firm’s auction hall at Middle Quarter Plaza in Woodbury. Preview times are Thursday, February 25th from 10am to 5pm; Friday February 26th from 10am to 5pm; Saturday, February 27th from 10am to 5pm; and Sunday, February 28th from 9am to sale time.

Several fine Asian lots are being offered, including a Khmer polished sandstone figure of goddess Uma, Angkor Wat Style, 12th century, wearing a striated sarong, central sash with beading and leaf-shaped pendants, large frontal overfold covering wide belt with oblong jewels, upper arms with beaded quatrefoil armlets, chest with broad foliate ornamented collar on display stand. Provenance: See Sotheby's Indian, Himalayan and Southeast Asian art sale, New York, Saturday, October 6, 1990 Lot 240. The figure measures 19 3/4" high, 7 3/4" wide. Also on offer is a fine Chinese Export blue and white porcelain vase, K'ang Hsi Period (1662-1722) made for Near Eastern market with wood stand, measuring 20" high, 8" diameter. The offerings also include a pair of Chinese carved spinach jade footed bowls on wood stands, measuring 1" high, 7 1/4" diameter.

Chinese furniture is represented with a rare Chinese recessed-leg painting table, late Ming Dynasty or early Qing Dynasty, with single-panel top set within the wide rectangular mitred frame with mortise and tenon top and stretcher construction, with inset bamboo field in top, the frame supported on thick rounded legs joined by pairs of stretchers and rounded shaped supports. This Pingtouan form is referred to in the Classic of Lu Ban as a 'character one' table due to its similarity in profile to the single horizontal stroke of the Chinese character for one. Several examples of this elegant form have been published. See "Splendor of Style, Classical Furniture from the Ming and Qing Dynasties", National Museum of History, Taipei, 1999, p. 143, for a large huanghuali recessed-leg painting table of similar form, dated to the 16th or 17th century. Several Thai items will cross the block, including a framed Thai painting of figures in courtyard, pigment and gilt on fabric, with provenance: from the collection of Jim Thompson, founder of the world renowned Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company, Bangkok, Thailand. Sight size: 15 3/4" high, 11" wide.

Among the many Mid-Century items being sold is a Frank Gehry for Knoll bentwood "Face Off" table with glass top and four "Hat Trick" chairs, branded "Gehry Knoll made in USA 02/20/93, 02/06?/93, 7/10/92, 02/27/93". Dimensions are 33 1/2" high, 23" wide, 18" deep to 28 3/4" high, 42" diameter. There is also a Frank Gehry for Knoll bentwood coffee table with glass top, branded "Gehry Knoll 4/16/93" and measuring 14" high, 39 3/4" wide, 39 3/4" deep. Other Mid-Century items include a Modernist bronze sculpture, cast as five pairs of wrestlers in a series of consecutive poses simulating a Judo throw, mounted on a plexiglass stand, sculpture measuring 7" high, 39" wide, 4 1/4" deep; a Modernist chrome coffee table with glass top measuring 15 1/4" high, 48" wide, 20" deep; a Modernist Le Corbusier style chrome and suede settee sized 25" high, 61" wide, 32 1/2" deep; three separate Modernist chrome and glass floor lamps; and two rare Murano glass modern lamps. Also offered is a pair of Knoll Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chairs, upholstered in brown leather, measuring 30 1/2" high, 30" wide.

One of the most unique silver lots being sold is a pair of Cambodian .900 silver pumpkin form containers with chased foliate decoration, both stamped 90%, measuring 7" high, 9" diameter and weighing 58.8 troy ounces. Also offered is an important Georg Jensen sterling silver flatware service for twelve in the Continental pattern marked "Georg Jensen Denmark", Jensen cloth rolls included; the service comprises fourteen dinner forks, twenty-two fish forks, three luncheon forks, twelve demitasse spoons, fourteen teaspoons, twelve dessert/soup spoons, twelve dinner knives, twelve luncheon knives, twelve butter knives, pair salad servers, cake knife, pastry server, and jam spoon. Total weighable silver is 120.29 troy ounces.

Several English and Continental furniture items are also being offered, including a fine Regency mahogany brass mounted credenza/serving table with three brass grillwork doors and brass gallery, 19th century measuring 64" wide, 34" high, 20 1/4" deep; a Regency inlaid mahogany two pedestal dining table, 19th century sized at 28 1/4" high, 57" wide, 50 1/4" deep, together with two extra leaves. Also being sold is a fine Irish (Dublin) Georgian mahogany tall case clock, having a broken arch crest over carved lion moulding, engraved brass and steel dial signed "Wm. Edwards-Dublin", the case with scalloped arched door on bracket base, sized at 89" high, 20" wide, 9 3/4" deep.

This sale also features American formal and country painted furniture, including a fine Pennsylvania softwood corner cabinet, several chest and tables, early 18th century seating furniture, and a fine American mid-Atlantic mahogany tall case clock, probably Pennsylvania, with broken arch in inlaid mahogany case having a painted moon phase dial, case with bellflower vine and urn inlay on bracket base, standing 98" high, 20" wide, 10 3/4" deep. American folk art items include an unusual carved folk art sculptural panel of an automobile, a painted barber pole, and other interesting items.
