Woodbury, CT – On Sunday June 26th Schwenke Auctioneers presents its June Americana and Fine Estates Auction with a remarkable offering of over 800 lots consigned from several separate estates and consignors from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. The auction includes several fine groups of American country and formal furniture and decorations, American folk art, Asian decorative arts, Mid-Century Modern decorative arts, English and Continental furniture and decorative arts, English & other sterling silver, jewelry, fine art, miscellaneous decorative arts, and estate oriental rugs. Estate material includes many lots of jewelry from a Ridgefield, Connecticut estate; American country furniture from a Princeton, New Jersey estate; American folk art and country furniture from a Roxbury, Connecticut estate; many lots of Croatian and Eastern European fine art from a New York City estate, American formal furniture and decorative arts from a Ridgefield, Connecticut estate; American paintings and folk art from a Southbury, Connecticut estate; fine American furniture from a New York City estate; and other estate property.
This sale begins at 11:00 am in the firm’s auction hall at 710 Main Street South, Middle Quarter Plaza, in Woodbury. Preview times are Thursday, June 23rd through Saturday, June 25th from 10:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday from 9:00am to 11:00 am.
Specialty Items
Two very exciting lots being offered are Paul McCartney's original gold record for "Let It Be", gifted to the consignor who was McCartney’s agent. The record is accompanied by a letter of authenticity, together with a whimsical painted figure in cellophane rendered by Paul McCartney, also gifted to the consignor. The gold record is framed in a presentation case which measures 21 1/2" high, 17 1/2" wide. A second presentation record to be sold is a rare and unique custom designed platinum record, in a frame measuring 21 1/2" high, 17 1/2" wide, representing ten different platinum albums for Grand Funk Railroad, presented to the same consignor at the time when he was manager for Grand Funk Railroad.
Jewelry
Many lots of fine jewelry are on offer, most originating from a Ridgefield CT estate. Prime jewelry lots include a large 18K gold and pearl "memento mori" locket depicting a miniature painting of a gentleman, a locket of hair on verso, in straw work box, 3 1/2" high; an Eric DeKolb (Austrian, 1916-2001), 14K gold medieval style cross stamped on verso "Eric DeKolb 14K". Mid-Century Modern
Several fine lots of Mid-Century Modern are hitting the block in this sale. Notable lots include a documented George Nakashima (American, 1905-1990), triple sliding door cabinet, circa 1973, with American black walnut slab form top with free form front edge over three pandanus cloth mounted sliding doors, concealing three interior sections, fitted with three drawers in center section and fitted for shelves on each end section. On verso in black ink "Roman", probable original owner. The cabinet measures 32" high, 101 1/2" long, 22 1/2" deep, with provenance a Maryland estate, and Doyle Galleries, NY, Doyle At Home/Modern, February 28, 2007, where the cabinet fetched over $30,000; a pair of vintage Hvidt & Molgaard Ax chairs, leatherette and molded beech with teak detail designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Molgaard-Nielsen in 1947, produced by Fritz Hansen, Denmark, stamped on underside "FH, Made in Denmark", and measuring 31" high, 24" wide, 16 1/2" deep; a possibly Isamu Noguchi (Japanese, 1904-1988), coffee table for Herman Miller with 3/4" thick glass top and aluminum pin holding two shaped base sections, dimensions 15 3/4" high, 43 1/2" wide, 40" deep; a Mario Comense for Pozzy & Verga mid-century molded teak high back "Flame" side chair with upholstered faux leopard pattern seat, stamped "1X" on underside, dimensions 45 1/2" high, 13 1/2" wide, 17 1/2" deep; and a vintage Knoll Eero Saarinen tulip table, 29" high, 42" diameter.

A Connecticut estate yielded a rare lot, Anita Dube (Indian, b. 1958), "I/32 Tara Apartments edition of ten photos, number 1 of 10 editions, dated 2000, each signed, titled, numbered, dated on verso, sight size approximately 10 5/8" high, 7 1/8" wide.
Also being sold for a Connecticut estate are several original political cartoons by Charles Lewis Bartholomew (American, 1869-1949 editorial cartoonist). Mr. Bartholomew was known simply as "Bart" and is most widely known for his daily cartoons published by The Minneapolis Journal.
Eastern European Art
The sale also includes over 75 lots of Croatian and Eastern European naïve/folk art paintings, being sold for the estate of a prominent New York City dealer/collector who specialized in Croatian Naïve art, which is a classification of art that is often characterized by a childlike simplicity in its subject matter and technique. Over 185 works are included in the grouped lots, and include many reverse paintings on glass, silkscreens, and works in other mediums. Artists represented include Djuro Popec, Ivicia Fister, Josip Horvat, Petar Gregec, Ivan Vecenaj, Zeljko Seles, Ivan Lackovic, Dragica Loncaric, Franjo Klopotan, Antun Bahunek, Branko Bahunek, Eugen Buktenica, Florika Puja, Djuro Popec, Ivan Rabuzin, Ivan Generalic, Emir Dragulu and Ivan Vecenaj.
Asian Decorative Arts
The Schwenke firm has become known for upside surprises in the area of Asian decorative arts, ever since the sale a few years ago of a double sided jade panel for a record $392,000. This sale has several lots of Asian decorative arts on offer, including a fine Chinese sang De boeuf glazed covered jar of tapering form, Chien Lung period 1736-1795, in a custom box, the jar measuring 12 1/2" high, 7 3/4" wide; a Chinese export cut corner bowl, with fer de rouge decoration, bearing the label on base “Circa Antiques Juanita Grundin”, sized 4 3/4" high, 10" wide; a Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze green Tara figure, elaborately bedecked and attired, seated with right foot resting on a lotus, set on a double lotus base and measuring 8 1/2" high, 5 1/2" wide, 4 1/2" deep; a Sino-Tibetan bronze Amitayus buddha, seated in Padmasana and holding the Vase of Life, on a pierced lotus base, 7 1/2" high, 5" wide, 3 1/2" deep; a Chinese bronze Bodhisattva Manjushri, finely detailed with attributes of book and padma form ruyi, seated on a lion, atop a lotus plinth base, 9 1/2" high, 6 1/2" wide, 4 1/2" deep; a Chinese twelve panel carved and polychromed lacquer screen depicting birds, flowering trees and pond in a landscape, with each panel 8' high, 18" wide, 3/4" deep, and overall length 18'; a Japanese Katana sword with sharkskin wrapped handle, containing one animal form menuki, 36 1/2" long, 1 1/2" wide; a pair of Japanese orange lacquer turned wood containers, 16" high, 14" diameter; a pair of country Chinese carved and painted arm chairs, with oxbow crests, paneled seats and box stretchers,19th century, dimensions 27" high, 24" wide, 18.5" deep, with provenance a private New York collection; a fine Chinese carved and painted ivory tusk, profusely carved with a battle scene waged in a mountainous setting with rocky outcrops and fortress, 18" high, 4 1/2" wide, 4" deep; a Thangka Samantabhadra depicting a central mandala surrounded by various deities in union in natural pigments on fabric, sight size 27 1/2" high, 18 1/2" wide; an early small Tibetan thangka, pigments and gilt on fabric, 17 1/2" high, 13 1/2" wide; several Chinese white and celadon jade pendant placques; a Chinese bronze Jambhala figure, seated in halitasana holding attributes of Nakula Mongoose and wish granting Jewel, together with an associated carved giltwood double lotus base, possibly Japanese, the figure 6 1/2" high, 4 1/2" wide, 3 1/2" deep; a Thangka depicting Chakrasamvara and Vajrayogini Yabyum, natural pigments and gilt on fabric, signed on verso, the sheet: 39" high, 29" wide, and total hanging size 53" high, 36" wide; an Asian carved, polychromed and gilded standing figure of Guan Yin, 37" high, 10 1/2" wide; and a work in the manner of Qi Baishi (Chinese, 1864-1957), “Eagle on a Pine Branch”, watercolor on paper, signature seal lower right, bears strong calligraphic inscription upper right with poem "92 years old, still strong like the bird" in a carved hardwood frame under glass, sight size 38" high, 19" wide.
Ethnographic and Tribal Arts
Twenty five ethnographic and native/tribal arts lots are crossing the block, including African tribal masks, figures and tools, a New Guinea Sepik River carved wood and fiber mask, 27" high, 10" wide; an African carved and painted wood Dogon mask, 25" high, 13" wide; and an African Bamana Chi Wara carved wood headdress, 49 1/2" high, 12 1/2" wide.

Americana, Formal/Country and Folk Art
This large auction has at its core a sizable group of American formal and country furniture, decorations and folk art consigned from several estate sources. Over 300 Americana lots will be offered, and the Schwenke firm anticipates that the Americana section will begin selling at approximately 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

Several American wall, mantle, bracket and tall clocks are selling, including a brass dial Bucks County, Pennsylvania walnut tall clock, dial signed "Benjamin Morris, New Britain", the case with a molded closed bonnet, tombstone shaped door and bracket feet, 89" high, 20" wide, 11" deep. Benjamin Morris (1748-1833), worked in Reading, Hilltown and New Britain, Pennsylvania, and was a highly productive clock maker who is estimated to have made at least three hundred tall clocks.
Oriental Carpets
The sale also includes over 35 fine estate oriental carpets including Persian, Caucasian and Turkoman room and scatter sized rugs, and other regional and modern rugs of varying sizes. In addition to a very large room size Sarouk carpet measuring 20' long, 11' wide, the group of carpets includes a fine Caucasian prayer rug carpet measuring 47" long, 31" wide, and a fine Persian Heriz room size carpet, 8' 10" long, 12' 3" wide.
